At New Jersey Pediatric Neuroscience Institute our pediatric neurosurgeons and neurologists work in very close collaboration with pediatric oncologists, neuroradiologists, radiation health physicians and with physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, to assure the best possible outcome for every child who presents with a brain tumor. Your brain has very many little grey cells that make it possible for you to think, feel, learn, remember, see, hear, talk, sing, run, jump, play, and do everything else that you do.
Those 86 billion neurons send out long fibers to connect with each other. Those fibers are like telegraph wires they use to send messages throughout the brain.
The “brain wires” that neurons use to send messages are called AXONS
The “brain wires” that neurons use to receive messages are called DENDRITES
Added all together, the total length of all the axons and dendrite in your brain is about 500,000 kilometers (310,686 miles). That is greater than the distance between the earth and the moon!!
When special MRI brain scan images are performed to reveal the thousands of kilometers of interconnecting brain axons, they appear as bundles of fibers that travel in specific directions.
When the special MRI scan is set to identify bundles of axons that travel specifically from one point in the brain to another point in the brain, specific pathways of axon interconnection are revealed.
